SpectraPort™  was developed as a Universal Media Interface by Design Net Technical Products, Inc.     The interface is patented to ensure adherence to the standard, but it is licensed freely to others under an open-source License Model.   This model provides for the following:

A) SpectraPort™ default mode  - This mode describes the standard configuration of all pins and functions when a host and cradle device are initialized.  All devices must support this mode of operation.  Licensing is free of charge if available interfaces are implemented as defined in the specification.   (i.e. A media player with an audio output must use the Audio Output Pins on the SpectraPort™ Connector.)

B) SpectraMax expanded mode – When a licensee expands upon the SpectraPort™ standard, they must still maintain compatibility with the default mode of operation but they may also choose to support expanded functions in one of the following ways:

1. SpectraMax Public Extension – Define the expanded use of the SpectraPort™ inteterface and contribute the enhancements back to the SpectraPort™ Project to be available to the public.  The new SpectraMax Profile will be assigned an ID and will become part of the specification.  This use model provides for use of SpectraPort™ licensing free of charge.

2. SpectraMax Private Branch – Define the expanded use of the SpectraPort™ interface but keep your enhancements private for use by only your products.  The new SpecraMax Branch will be assigned an ID but no details need to be disclosed about the implementation.  This use model is considered a private branch that will incur a license fee per “player” device.  Cradle devices remain license free.
